Kate is an experienced litigator with particular interest in acting for clients in respect of regulatory offending, commercial crime and fraud cases.
In addition to conducting litigation in the District and High Courts, Kate has wide-ranging experience advising on regulatory systems reform and compliance issues, and investigations and reviews of regulatory frameworks. Kate is well-placed to act as an independent reviewer or investigator for clients.
Kate joined the Bar in February 2025, following five and a half years as a regulatory litigation partner at Meredith Connell.
Prior to that, Kate worked in litigation in private practice in the United Kingdom, and for the United Kingdom's Government Legal Department, advising on public law litigation. Before moving to the United Kingdom, Kate was a Crown prosecutor at Meredith Connell for five years.
Kate has conducted criminal and civil proceedings on behalf of New Zealand Government Departments including the Commerce Commission, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Primary Industries, the Department of Corrections and the Department of Conservation. These cases have traversed a broad range of proceedings including: prosecutions of individuals and companies; civil appeals against various decisions made by regulators; and applications for judicial review and interim relief.
Kate has provided in-depth advice on regulatory compliance, including large-scale reviews of departmental systems, policies and practices. Kate has extensive experience advising on applications for appointments, certifications and licenses in a range of regulatory contexts.
As a Crown prosecutor, Kate has prosecuted the range of serious criminal offending in the District and High Courts and appeared in respect of appeals against conviction and sentence.
